In general, you do NOT want to use "as administrator".

I tried to add in file list's <add> button thus I thought it's registered at my default index db

I have the service disabled
I'll suspect that then is the cause.
And Console is simply not finding the "pipe" (which is needed for IPC communication with the service) & so reports as much.

Do you use multiple -instances?

In Everything.ini, there a few pipes.
A peace pipe, a smoke pipe, & conduit pipes ;-).

I take it that these are the default values:

Are D: & E: the removable drives?

Do you alternate physical removable drives that are using (borrowing) the same drive letter?
As in, is one time your Samsung E:, & the next time your Kingston is E:?

Are you running Everything "as Administrator"?


An .efu is simply a file.
So unless you do something to remove it, it should persist.

So "my search" is your Bookmark?

Did you add a colon (:) to the Bookmark name (& maybe quotes around it if it includes spaces ?) ?

Something like this, where blabla: is a Bookmark, works here (Everything 1.5 in case that matters):

Well, how did the three get there?

When you open Everything, by default, a single window opens.

What happens after that, you control.

You want another windows, Ctrl+N - new window
You want another tab, Ctrl+T - new tab (in existing window)


You want an entirely different instance , you use the ...

About how many files in your .db?

Before you go to shut down, do you close Everything first, or do you simply tell the computer to shut down & expect it to close any programs that you might have open?


(I wouldn't think it to be normal, particularly, but I don't shut down, only sleep.)

I wasn't looking for a name length reduction particularly, but rather to see if a Short File Name version of the file ended up being created.

So if you had
"this is a really long ... 255 char file name.TXT"
& when you copied the file, it ended up as an 8.3 (SFN),

It could be ? that Everything is sending a SFN.
So the file could be there, only you're not seeing it, cause you're looking for a LFN where the copy was named as a SFN.

(I wouldn't particularly expect that, but might be possible.)


So take 1 file that fails to copy, & try to copy that into a new ...

Help | Troubleshooting Information -> Database:, will show you the name & location.

Windows Copy or Hasleo or a file manager... will all work basically the same, so what will be with your data will be.
At least if you have a copy of it, you can peruse its' data without further access to the source ...

From my early days I have believed that a simple search string examines the Full path, But that is not so; only if "path:" is stated explicitly or implicitly (by a preface "\") will a simple string be applied to a file or a path.

Back it up multiple times, saved to different places (can't hurt).
(Can't hurt to back up you entire Everything "profile".)

It's the latter ;-).

You have Picture enabled.
So unless you have .doc association to a Picture, you're not going to find it.


You can also include path: in your search (or enable Match Path in Options [which seems to be overly broad, for some]).

Well, Everything does do that already, actually.
But only for indexed Properties. In a global "sidecar" (if you will), Everything-15.db.

Now, if you could have a searchable, displayable "blob" Property that stored blobs of data, in .db or in .blob...

That does seem to present correct results.

I even did a search, ES.exe wfn:ES.ini, & got no results ;-).

Though... ES.exe regex:ES-.*\.INI$ did turn up babel-es-MX.ini.


The -instance 1.5a -savesettings is a good tip, as I've always included -instance 15 [as it is on my end ...

Even if not in the GUI, you can also set them via the searchbar:

/context_menu_omit_results=1

/context_menu_omit_results=0


You'd have to know the item name, & what values it accepts, 1 generally being enabled, 0 disabled.
But add them together, throw in the /, & you've got it.
