No System Tray Icon

Running VISTA SP1. Used Task Scheduler to start Everything. (Included the -startup argument.) After a shutdown followed by reboot the Everything icon is missing from the System Tray. Task Manager shows Everything as a running process. How do I access the Everything window without the icon? Why is there no icon? At this point, if I manually start Everything I get the window, but when I close the window still no icon. If I kill the process, manually start Everything, close the window, the icon appears.

Anyway, you can assign a hotkey by Options > General.

Are there any error messages in the Errorlog.txt file in your "Everything" installation folder?
Something like:

Failed to notify shell icon, GetLastError(): x

Please make sure the tray icon is not hidden.

To re-show the icon:

• Right click the Start menu.
• Click Properties.
• Click the Toolbar tab.
• Click Customize...
• Select Everything.
• Change the behavior to Always show.
• Click OK.
• Click OK.

No errors in Errorlog.txt.

Did as you asked (icon not hidden and set to Always Show)...same results

Did clean re-install...same results.

Able to set hot key: CTRL-ALT-E...Everything window appears.

In order to get icon to appear in System Tray, must kill process and manually start Everything.

Hardware is a Compaq Presario C741NR laptop.

OS is Windows Vista SP1 with current maintenance.

Security provided by ZoneAlarm Security Suite with default settings.

Exactly followed Everything FAQ 1.12 concerning Task Scheduler.

Everything starts, runs in background, but no System Tray icon.

Possible timing issue?

FWIW, I've hidden the tray icon with Win7. I always use Everything from Windows Explorer, right click on the folder or drive in question and Search Everything. It's rare I want to search the whole computer since there are 2TB of data on three drives there.

I have had the same problem of no system tray icon, even though the task is showing in the Task Manager. I found this thread which suggested it might be a timing problem, so I added a 1 minute delay to the task startup in the task scheduler and now the icon appears. Perhaps this will be helpful to others and to help identifying the permanent fix for this problem.

My details:

Running Everything 1.2.1.371 on Windows 7
Starting Everything using the task scheduler triggered at login with elevated privileges as documented in the FAQ
Added a 1 minute delay to this task startup in the task scheduler to fix the problem
Verified no errors in Errorlog.txt and icon not hidden

This issue should be fixed for the next release of "Everything".

"Everything" will automatically delay adding the tray icon if it fails to add the first time.

I found this same problem to be true in my Windows 7 64 Bit machine. I ended up having to use the Option s Tab in Everything and had to place the check mark to automatically start with Windows. The only issue that I have with this is that the UAC pops up asking me if I want to run Everything on every reboot. If I remove this check mark then the icon is removed from the System tray.

What I would like to see is a separate check mark box for placing the icon into the System Tray.
