Crashing while not searching

Post by wizard43 »

I keep getting a popup with this message: .\src\thread_t.cpp(106): thread_t::start(): Fatal error: Assertion failed
Last Windows Error 8: Not enough storage is available to process this command.
It happens when I am not searching and have not search window open, Everything is running in the background with an icon in the tray. Once this happens Everything terminates. When restarting it often complains about an out of date database and I have to delete the db and then restart again. What's going on? By the way I have 4GB of RAM and over 300GB free on the system drive, so I don't think it is really "out of storage". I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.

This sounds like a bug that occurred in an older version of "Everything".
There was a thread handle leak that would eventually use up all handle resources.

What version is causing this ?

You might need to disable monitoring if you are using "Everything" version 1.2.1.371.

To disable monitoring on all volumes:
  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Volumes tab.
  • For each volume in the Local NTFS volumes list:
    • Uncheck Monitor changes.
  • Click OK.
Threading has been re-written for the next release of "Everything".
Does the problem occur with the unofficial beta from:

I have the same problem, and I am using version 1.2.1.371 with Windows XP Professional.
The "Assertion failed" error has been causing me crashes and data loss.

I can try the fix you suggest - but will that mean that new data will not be indexed?

I love the program and am happy to try the beta - but will I just be getting new problems?

The latest alpha version should fix these issues.

The alpha version is stable, however, there are some incomplete features.

Can you say what features are missing.

Many thanks.

What I'm trying to evaluate is:

Should I stick with version 1.2.1.371 with Monitor changes unchecked, or would I be better off with the alpha version?

Thanks for your help.

Some menu items do not work, and the list tab does nothing.

You would be better off sticking with the alpha.

Seems this has returned -- have received the same message twice in 2 days, have disarmed the Monitor as noted above...
Tell me I am not the ONLY one having this.... :-)

I ran a search last night in version 1.2.1.371 on Windows 7 and I believe I accidentally left my search results window open all night (but I may have closed it like normal). Either way, I saw this error occur as well as a result; it was waiting for me on my desktop monitor when I woke up the next morning. So yeah, this helps confirm that webmaster-thwrn is not the ONLY one experiencing this in the more recent versions. I have copied the exact wording below that was stated in the error popup:

Everything Fatal Error
.\src\thread_t.cpp(106): thread_t::start(): Fatal error: Assertion failed Last Windows Error 8: Not enough storage is available to process this command.

I will be disabling the Monitoring now like everyone else has suggested.

Eh, 1.3 has been released.

Plus what happened 4 years ago is not likely to have much bearing on current?
