Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
I've run into this wonderful product and I'm wondering if there is a way (either built in or a workaround) to run the HTTP / WEB as a service? It seems that it is independent of the Everything service itself. e.g. setting up Everything as a service does not enable the HTTP when logged out of a machine.
This is a super fast & fabulous web search for a particular purpose I have, but keeping it running under a logged in user is not practical.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Dave

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
In previous versions you could run Everything as a service with the HTTP/ETP.
I will review this before the next major release.
It can be done with Everything 1.3, although its a bit of a pain to setup.
You will need the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=17657
You will need to create a service manually:

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
I have added client service support in Everything" version 1.3.2.649b
Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
1.By the way if you start the service from the UI it starts as a usual one unless client service installed from the command line? Once installed if a service is activated from UI will it be client service only.
2.If a service is stopped thru process explorer , in the UI it is indicated by a semi greyed tick. Why can't it show a blank (either it is on or off) so that it can be activated.Perhaps it serves to be a indicator that service is opted but presently stopped? In that case if you can add a link to some log file a user can find any unusual incident.

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
The client service can only be installed from the command line.1.By the way if you start the service from the UI it starts as a usual one unless client service installed from the command line? Once installed if a service is activated from UI will it be client service only.
It is not related to the Everything service for indexing NTFS volumes.
When installing the client service please make sure Everything is not running and will not run on system startup.
This is unrelated.2.If a service is stopped thru process explorer , in the UI it is indicated by a semi greyed tick. Why can't it show a blank (either it is on or off) so that it can be activated.Perhaps it serves to be a indicator that service is opted but presently stopped? This is related to the Everything service for NTFS indexing. Not the client service.
It is greyed because the setting is indeterminate.
That is, it is not fully uninstalled or fully installed. It could be path to Eveything.exe is different, the port is different or the service is stopped. You can check or uncheck the option to install or uninstall the Everything service.
Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
If this is a Ok syntax for XP "C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything-1.3.2.649b\Everything.exe" -start-client-service (it does not give an error), I get no indication from the process explorer of such a service being started.
Yes I was talking about the regular service only. I thought that the box is an indicator of state(on or off). So there are other indicators as well.....This is related to the Everything service for NTFS indexing. Not the client service.

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
There should be an error reported if a problem occurred. If this is a Ok syntax for XP "C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything-1.3.2.649b\Everything.exe" -start-client-service (it does not give an error), I get no indication from the process explorer of such a service being started.
Maybe the client service is starting and stopping instantly?
Try starting the client service from Start -> Run -> services.msc
The client service should be listed as Everything Client
-------
You will need to run the client service commands as an administrator.
The commands are silent under normal operation.
Any errors that occur should be displayed in an error message dialog.
You will need to install the client service before starting it.
When the service is installed the service is not started, you will need to start the service manually with -start-client-service or restart your computer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CheckboxYes I was talking about the regular service only. I thought that the box is an indicator of state(on or off). So there are other indicators as well.....
Settings that are indeterminate are not changed when clicking apply or ok.
Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
I tried starting the service from the services in my XP system. It stopped immediately. I have attached a snap...

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
Please exit Everything and try renaming your Everything.ini to _everything.ini
Try starting the service again..
If it works, please send your _everything.ini

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
It does work now. I have attached the _Everything.ini. Meanwhile the path in Service entry reads as "C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything-1.3.2.649b\Everything.exe" -client-svc.

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
Thanks for the Everything.ini
I am not sure what happened here.
This client service should not be started if you are already running Everything as a normal application.*
The Everything.ini appears fine.

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
Once again--
1.I closed the running instance and ensured nothing related to everything is in the process explorer.
2.I started client service from services. Running fine.
3.Repeated step 1.
4.Started Everything GUI thru shortcut.
5.Attempted to run the client service again thru Services. Getting the same error.
XP SP 3 related? Starting Client services brings an instance GUI of Everything. So if it is already running the clash?

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
Are you exiting Everything after step 4?4.Started Everything GUI thru shortcut.
5.Attempted to run the client service again thru Services. Getting the same error.
If you run the client service while the client is already running as a normal application, the service will give it focus and exit immediately.
Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
A contradiction here..?
You can not run the client service while running the client as a normal application.
I haven't understood properly yet.Launching the client service from services while no instances are running also launches the GUI.If that is final then there are no issues. It has to be ensured that running instance of Everything has to be shut down before starting the client service. Might be a shortcut with revised target would solve the issue. This client service can start and stop if you already had an Everything instance running.
Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
Sorry, I meant to say:

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
If I understood this , while launching Everything it should be launched with client service enabled.Your advisory seems to suggest that , but am not able to get a clue on how to modify the ini file to suit this. Also I find another set of everything.ini created here..C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\Everything against the usual C:\Documents and Settings\NAME\Application Data\Everything
Ok then...
EDIT
2,Now as I logged in , I saw a instance of Everything running.(I have not ticked Auto start in the main version). Thru Process explorer I find it is the services running.I checked the presently running instance of Everything and I still find the auto start NOT TICKED. So the CLIENT services has autostarted and it has brought this instance of Everything. In that case there are 2 folders containing Everything.ini as mentioned above , and to which this one (running instance) belong to?
Ok then...

Sorry if I wasn't clear, you do not need to run the client service.
It is only useful if you are running Windows Server without logging in.
See Everything Client Service Help for more information.
I do recommend running the Everything service (which is completely different to the client service) if you are running a normal user account on vista or later.
There is no ini settings for running the client service.but am not able to get a clue on how to modify the ini file to suit this.
You can only install/start the client service from the command line.
The client service uses the Everything.ini in the same location as your Everything.exe if app data is disabled.
This can occur if the client service runs as a normal user. Also I find another set of everything.ini created here..C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\Everything against the usual C:\Documents and Settings\NAME\Application Data\Everything

Please make sure you do not run the client as a normal application while the client service is running.
Please make sure you do not run the client service while running the client as a normal application.
This is correct, when the client service is installed it will run on system startup as the system user.2,Now as I logged in , I saw a instance of Everything running.(I have not ticked Auto start in the main version). Please uninstall the client service if unsure.
To uninstall the client service:
Everything.exe -uninstall-client-service
The client service will use the Everything.ini in the same location as your Everything.exe if app data is disabled.
Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
Okay. I will endeavor to get to know more on the Server part of it just out of academic interest. I was trying to know about the client service...
I think mutually one instance (phenomenon?) client-service or the client application can run at a time. If the normal application is running, client service would not start and vice-versa.This can occur if the client service runs as a normal user.
Please make sure you do not run the client as a normal application while the client service is running.

For the time being I have changed the start to manual from Automatic in the Services...This is correct, when the client service is installed it will run on system startup as the system user.
Please uninstall the client service if unsure.
Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
I will give it a try, assuming I can get a prior version--I see a lot of responses on this post, but I think this was the only one that was related to my questionvoid wrote:In previous versions you could run Everything as a service with the HTTP/ETP.

Please try the client service it is a lot simpler than installing the Everything client as a service manually.
Ignore the rest of the thread as its unrelated.

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
I was able to get this to work with SRVANY.EXE. Thanks. It actually wasn't a pain, I've used SRVANY.EXE (a long time ago) so it only took a few.davej wrote:I will give it a try, assuming I can get a prior version--I see a lot of responses on this post, but I think this was the only one that was related to my questionvoid wrote:In previous versions you could run Everything as a service with the HTTP/ETP.

This is exactly what I needed.
Thanks again.

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
I've been using the web site for a while now (see my last post) but it seems that even though I can run the website under srvany.exe it still requires someone to be logged into the system for the main application to work.
I was using a 1.2.? version and upgraded it to the latest beta and now it seems like when I log out regardless of the service working the website isn't available.
Are there any changes to how this works in the newer version?
Thanks,
Dave

Re: Web Server / HTTP as Service ?
Hello.
I'm running into a similar issue with running Everything HTTP Server and essentially requiring it to Run as a HTTP Service while logged off. I've tried SC.exe and the old Windows 2003 srvany.exe method, and both fail to start on a Windows 2008 R2 server. I have both services -client-svc and -svc processes (services) running as a domain user, local admin (also tried local system, interactive), I also find I need a third process of Everything.exe to serve HTTP. When I log off the server the HTTP server stops working. I find the both services -client-svc and -svc processes (services) are still running with pslist.exe.
My current version of Everything is 1.3.4.686.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, kind regards, Kieren.
