Omit Results

From my experience, there is a need to add to Edit menu (and RightClick Menu) one more command: "Omit Results".
This command is especially good, while there is "Proof by contradiction" searching.

You type in the serach box, then you go to Results, select and omit results as you wish, and find (or save) your desired results more fast.
After omitting results, you may continue typing in the search box to reduce more results (so it needs to remeber what is omitted till Refresh or deleting in the search box).

As it is, you "filter" as you type.

So you "omit" by expanding your search term, making it more specific, or by using the NOT (!) operator, excluding specific terms.

I wonder why it was not understood. But I'll try to explain.

In Search Box type:
"C:\Windows\Cursors\"

Now, try to search and get in results only the Black cursors.
Then save the results, or copy path etc.

Edit:
Maybe you want that what is omitted will be reflected in the search box.
I don't know what is better:
1. A long string in search box of all files excluded.
2. Special Results Mode after omitting (like I was tried to say).

Oh, & also a Bookmark or Filter may help.
Set up a Filter, "C:\Windows\Cursors\" & select it.

Then all you need to type in the search box is "black" to find all black cursors, or blue, or red, or green. (Maybe I should have used Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key .)

As for what I've mentioned:

I want to add:
1. "A long string in search box of all files excluded." Maybe it could be done by adding such Exclude item to "Context menu items" in Everything Options.
2. "Special Results Mode" could be "Everything Viewer"mode. For example, I noticed we can Export to CSV, but we can't open CSV file in Everthing...

I think it would be an useful addition.
besides excluding manually some files we could also need and option to search for all files whose name cotain some letters but not other, for example "Red" but not "Blue".
It could be written as Red -Blue and it would find "Red hot chilly peppers" or redhot but not "Red and blue"

Hi, I needed this feature again...
I want to add suggestion to use BackSpace key for omission, so that:
Selecting files from Results -> BackSpace = Omit Results

I found a way to do this.
1. Select items in Results to omit
2. Menu > Edit > Invert Selection
3. Ctrl+C (copy)
4. Ctrl+F (Find/Focus on Search)
5. Ctrl+V (paste)

Still it would be nice to have a feature that will do it by one step. (consider to add such a command to Keyboard shortcuts)

Edit:
Another way instead of steps 3,4,5 is
to drag the items (after step 2 - Invert Selection) and drop into the search box.

search for ext:PDF, then right click a path and select "Exclude this path from current search" (or something similar). Or:
search for c:\windows, then right click a DLL and select "Exclude this file type from current search"

I mentioned cases you couldn't even make Exclude rule in Searchbar i.e. excluding images in a images folder by their visual view [Alt+P].

Don't know if this question was for @void or for me, but if you're asking me how to design it:

- Add a $search command (mentioned earlier here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5236&p=19257&hilit=%24search#p19231)
- Add a variable %query%, which is equal to the current search query (in the search bar)
- Add custom context menu 1 to 10 (default all hidden)
- Add custom keyboard shortcuts for those

Now you could add $search( %query% !$pathpart(%1) ) or $search( %query% !$ext(%1) )
($ext would have to be added for that last example and be equal to the file extension of the selected file(s))


That way you have a versatile mechanism to implement different context menu's. And everyone can come up with the Context menus they desire.
Or present a drop-down box with a few predefined context menu options and one extra "DIY" option.

Something like that ....

(Not that I need this option ... ; my searches are most of the time very simple.)

Your question is not related to the topic, which is about selecting results from the results pane and then omitting them.
Anyway, please try:

Example in more detail:
1. In SearchBox you type in:
"C:\Windows\Cursors\"


2. You notice you don't want some icons/images/files in the result list and you select them to omit


3. You press a hotkey (like Backspace) or using the ContextMenu to "Omit Results", then you get a Secondary SearchBar (popped-up) omitting the selected files.


Notes:
1. The Secondary SearchBar is ANDed with the prime SearcBar. It just split the SearchBar for more convenient use.
2. You can also continue typing in the search bars.
3. Omitting again, will add the omitted results to the end of the Secondary SearchBar.
4. Instead of a Bar, you can use a type of a TextBox aligning the files vertically (CR LF = AND), making it easier to edit and make changes later:

5. You don't have to use a Secondary SearchBar. You can do it all in the background behind the scenes.

When the user starts a new search from scratch, "Omit Results" mode will be canceled (returning all omitted to the result list), and back to normal.

I will add basic temporarily omit functionality in the next alpha update (eg: bind a keyboard shortcut to the temporarily omit command)
