NAS / Network Search

Post by rawx »

Hello,

at the moment I'm trying to find a solution for this situation:

- multiple users with different accessrights
- NAS Storage
- Windows Workgroup (no AD)

Searching Files on the network is not acceptable at the moment so this is where Everything comes in. Now that I tried some stuff I have questions:

- The shared searchindex through ETP gives access to all files no matter what the actual user access rights are at the moment, correct?
- Is there an option for shared index that opens the connection through Windows Explorer? This would avoid the situation.

By default, yes.

Downloading via Everythings FTP server can be disabled so access to file contents can only be obtain via windows shares.
With Everything ETP downloading disabled, users may still have undesired access to the name of the files, but not the contents from Everything.

To disable Everything ETP file downloading:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the ETP/FTP server tab on the left.
  • Uncheck Allow file download.
  • Click OK.
You can also limit which files are indexed by Everything.
To exclude a folder from the Everything index:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the Exclude tab on the left.
  • Click Add Folder...
  • Select a folder to exclude a folder from the Everything index and click OK.
  • Click OK.

Have you considered folder indexing?
Folder indexing will only index what the user has access to via Windows shares. The down side is indexing will have to be done on each client (no shared index).

Hello Void,

thx for the fast response! folderindexing by client is somehow networktraffic from about 25 clients vs. 1 NAS which I try to avoid through indexing in first place, since they need to update it regulary. (maybe once a day is enough then this option should be OK).

I think the first option is more suitable for the project.
