Search only returns two results, full stop

Post by drislands »

To start, I have no illusions that I may have inadvertently changed some setting that caused this problem, but my Google-fu has failed me and I can't find out how on earth to resolve this.

At this time, Everything will only returns two results:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\Extensions\Microsoft\Web Tools\External\bower\node_modules\es5-ext\array\#" (this is a directory)
# results.PNG
# results.PNG (119.84 KiB) Viewed 2183 times
...and...
"C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\mods\millenaire\languages\ar\##TRANSLATE##.txt"
translate results.PNG
translate results.PNG (126.49 KiB) Viewed 2183 times
I'm baffled, because there are 537,775 instances of the latter -- all point to the same exact file -- and 103,012 instances of the former, again pointing to the exact same folder.

Additionally, when I click on one of the results, it behaves very erratically. Clicking on one result highlights it and whatever result was outlined, and clicking on another result highlights every result. I can then deselect all entries by clicking the background whitespace. Holding Shift or Alt or Control makes no difference to this behavior, and neither does powering off my keyboard.

------

I realize this issue may be resolvable by uninstall/reinstalling, but I'd really like to know what went wrong, not the least of which because I've made no changes to the settings since I installed in November.

Well, I fiddled with the Folder option, adding the C drive as a folder to scan, and results came back...then I removed it and disabled the "Automatically remove offline volumes" option, and the results still work...then I turned it back on, and it's still working. I'm not certain at all what the issue was, but for whatever reason it appears to be working now.

Was that enabled initially?

Do you also have your C: drive set up (enabled) in Options | Indexes -> NTFS... ?

@therube previously there were no folders listed under Indexes. And the C: drive is listed in NTFS, I believe it was set there originally as it won't let me remove it and I can't find an option to add another one.

I've seen something similar happen when a corrupt Everything database was saved to disk.
The corruption would cause a prefix of random text in front of every file or folder, it could be related...

Can you remember if the file sizes and dates were all the same?

Everything doesn't handle duplicated results in the same volume index well. The initial index would be fine. However, after saving to disk and loading from disk the database could be corrupt.

Forcing a rebuild would fix the issue.
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Indexes tab.
  • Click Force Rebuild.
  • Click OK.
