Everything as standard lokal search engine

Post by andiP. »

I am excited about "Everything". The speed is unsurpassable!

My proposal is:
One way to "Everything" use as the default local search engine (instead of Explorer Search)! Is that possible? Does anyone have an idea?

Wish you a Happy Easter and colorful eggs!

Greetings from Austria (still with snow)!

How about just setting a hotkey and ignoring Explorer Search all together? I just set Win-Z as my hotkey and use it like mad all day long. The explorer search takes more keystrokes/mouse clicks to get to.

solution for voidtools Everything Win 7 default
somebody1967 wrote: voidtools forum seems to be locked to new users, so I am posting here, because after joining this board, i cannot seem to send a message to another user. *sigh* hopefully the mods here will not be peeved, as I think this is useful info to share and I can't think of anywhere else to put it!:

I adapted (swiped?) the instructions from locate32 to create to reg files which will make Everything the default search for Win 7. Working perfectly with win 7 x64 and Everything-1.2.1.452a.

Using the locate32 instructions (I replaced "Locate32" with "Everything"; hopefully the locate32 author won't be upset):

"To make Everything as the default desktop search application, do the following:

- Open "Search protocol - Register.reg" file to a text editor (e.g. Notepad) and check that Everything installation directory is correct (default is C:\Program Files\Locate).
- Merge "Search protocol - Register.reg" file by double clicking it. Another way is to open registry editor (regedit.exe) and choose File / Import.
- Open "Default Programs" in Control Panel and choose "Associate a file type or protocol with a program". Find protocol "SEARCH" and choose "Change Program" (you can also double click the protocol). Choose "Everything".

Note: specifying Everything as a default search application does not replace Search feature in Windows Explorer completely. The default search application is only used when you type search term to "Start search" field in Start menu and press ENTER, or when Win+F, F3 or Ctrl-F keys are used to open search (i.e. you don't need to assign Win+F, F3 and Ctrl+F keys in Everything and keep Everything running)"

Here are the regfiles:

Search protocol - Register.reg
--------------------------------------

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Everything-search]
@="Everything search protocol"
"URL Protocol"=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Everything-search\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Everything\\Everything-1.2.1.452a.exe,-1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Everything-search\shell]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Everything-search\shell\open]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Everything-search\shell\open\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Everything\\Everything-1.2.1.452a.exe %1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\RegisteredApplications]
"Everything"="Software\\Everything\\Search\\Capabilities"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Everything]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Everything\Search]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Everything\Search\Capabilities]
"ApplicationName"="Everything"
"ApplicationDescription"="Everything filesearch utility"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Everything\Search\Capabilities\UrlAssociations]
"search"="Everything-search"

Search protocol - Unregister.reg

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\RegisteredApplications]
