Hi David
Congratulations on your Everything desktop search.
I am a web consultant and a highly discerning user.
I have tried most desktop search utilities (e.g. X1, Google Desktop, Copernic etc etc) and I find yours one of the most useful... and I use it A LOT !
BUT how can I get it to pre sort all the files that it finds by date?
It would be worth real money to me to get this.
Many thanks

Pre-sort list of file listing by DATE
Re: Pre-sort list of file listing by DATE
"Everything" does not index file dates.BUT how can I get it to pre sort all the files that it finds by date?
It is possible with the latest alpha release to efficiently sort by "Date recently changed".
Date recently changed is similar to date modified, but this information is only indexed for files and folder modified in the last week (depending on the size of the USN Change Journal).

I am confused by this.void wrote:"Everything" does not index file dates.BUT how can I get it to pre sort all the files that it finds by date?

To get clear, obviously it CAN do a sort, but you have to ask it to do so by clickin gon the Date Modified column.
And even then it say are you sure? And warn you that this might take a long time.
IF you are saying with the Alpha release that it will only display files modified in the last week, then this is only SLIGHTLY useful.
Like I say I would be prepared to pay real money to get this working properly on Date Modified.

Re: Pre-sort list of file listing by DATE
P.S. I have now installed "Version 1.2.1.451a" as suggested.
How can I get it to sort by "Date Recently Changed" by default?
Also btw, it is a pain that even when you do get it to sort by Date Modified,
that it takes THREE clicks to get it to sort by the most recent first.

Click on the "Date Recently Changed" column header to sort. How can I get it to sort by "Date Recently Changed" by default?
"Everything" should save the sort order when you close the window.
To sort by newest to oldest date/time first:Also btw, it is a pain that even when you do get it to sort by Date Modified,

- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the View tab.
- In the Advanced settings, from the View folder, check Sort by newest to oldest date/time first.
- Click OK.
Re: Pre-sort list of file listing by DATE
The dates displayed are retrieved as the screen is being built and only the dates for the screen are retrieved. If your search results in 12,000 hits not one of those 12,000 has a date associated with it until it is headed for the screen. this is why the warning that "this may take some time". SE has to read the directory for each of the 12,000 files and then sort them and then display them. That is why it is not done by default.shiphen wrote:I am confused by this.

SE's incredible speed comes from the fact that it stays away from the directory until it is ready to display a screen full of results. Then and only then does it get date info and size info (unless you ask for sort by date or size).
