Scanning (Drive)...

Post by vic. »

Everything gets stuck on Scanning... a specific drive and crashes when trying to make any changes with Tools -> Options. I had to add this drive manually in Indexes -> Folders because they weren't showing up in the search. I was able to successfully add two 'Folders' before this that successfully show up but no longer do since it's stuck Scanning. Any help would be appreciated!

Scanning folders will take several minutes.

If you change any other settings while Everything is scanning, Everything will appear to hang.
Everything should eventually recover.

To terminate Everything and remove folder indexes:
  • From the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + ESC), click the Details tab.
  • select Everything.exe and click End Task.
  • In Windows Explorer, type in the following address:
    %APPDATA%\Everything
  • Open your Everything.ini
  • Remove the following line:
    folders=...
where ... is a list of your folder indexes.
  • Save changes and restart Everything.
Re-add any desired folder indexes from Tools -> Options -> Folders.
Please allow Everything several minutes to scan folder indexes before making any further changes.

To check indexing progress (can even be done while Everything is showing Scanning... in the statusbar):
  • In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /debug
Type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /verbose
  • The current folder being scan is shown in Green text.
To close the debug console:
  • In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /debug

or, please try Everything 1.5 alpha.
Everything 1.5 fixes the hang issue and folder indexing progress is shown in Tools -> Options -> Folders.

Thanks for the reply! It hasn't been minutes it's been several hours and it's still scanning. This has been happening for the last few days and I removed the folders and re added them and the other two eventually loaded but not the third one. I just deleted and re-added them and will check the indexing process once they're up again.

Everything might be following a folder junction with a circular reference.

If the issue occurs again, please check the progress in the debug console as mentioned above.
