How do I lock my column headers so they never move positions?

Post by SuperDude »

Every now and then, some of my column headers switch positions. I then have to use the Organize Columns dialog to reset them. When they move positions seems to be extremely random.

Also, what does the “No change” (Columns) mean in the Organize Filters dialog?

Are you using a bookmark that changes the column layout? -Check each bookmark under Bookmarks -> Show all bookmarks -> Edit -> Columns
Are you using a filter to temporarily add or remove columns? -Check each filter under Search -> Organize filters -> Edit -> Columns
Is your Home sort changing the column layout? -Check Tools -> Options -> Home -> Columns

Filters will temporarily change column visibility.
Bookmarks will set column positions and visibility.

For filters, (No Change) means Everything will not temporarily add or remove any columns.
For bookmarks, (No Change) means Everything will not add or remove any columns, and will not change the order of columns.

Sorry to say that your advice does not help to solve my problem.
I have carefully set sequence and selection of column layouts in all my filters and bookmarks. Any all seemed to be OK. until I closed ET. My desired sequence of columns is [Name] [Extension] [Index volume] [Path] [Size] [Day created] [Day Accessed] and a few more irrelevant to the problem I want to present here. I set the layout in the [All] filter and in my personal filter, whilst in all other filters and bookmarks the [No change] setting was selected which I understand that the column layout displayed will not change regardless of which filter and/or bookmark I actually use.

My layout described above is kept by ET until I close ET session. but when I restarted ET again, it "forcefully" inserted [Date created] column between [Index volume] and [Path] columns and also changes the order of other columns. If it is acceptable on this forum I may attach exported settings and filters.csv for your inspeciton and advice what to do with such a nasty bug or what?

Your assistance will be grately appreciated as I use ET extensively and consider your software to be absolutely the best, most accurate and flexible as well as user-friendly of all other software of its kind.

It sounds like you have already carefully set a sequence of columns under Tools -> Options -> General -> Home -> Columns:. Here you can set the columns you wish new Everything windows to open with. The default is "(Use last value)" aka no change.

Thanks a lot for your advice which solved my problem perfectly. In fact, I did not know that the column layout is also contolled by Columns in Tools -> Options -> General -> Home. And the source of my problem lied there because the unwanted column was specified there in the column seleciton.

BTW let me poke my 3 cents.
As I see that the problem of column layout has been of not only my concern, what if Voidtools developed a kind of a user manual in which you could explain how to handle and set the most commonly sought parameters/custom settings. For instance there could be a brief section titled "Column layout" with only a few sentences, such as "column layouts are controlled and may be set
(1) for the whole application in Tools -> Options -> General -> Home -> Columns:
(2) for individual filters in..
(3) for bookmarks in.
(I am not giving an exact path to the control source as I am using a Polish version of ET and am not sure what the names of ceratain tags are in the English version.)
Other aspects and solutions could be presented in a similar way. I think the booklet should be dedicated to thoughful users rather than to brainless perpetual beginners.
Thanks again for your help. Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback mczerski,

The documentation will be updated for the Everything 1.5 release.

Everything 1.5 is in alpha and some features are still in development.
