Statusbar for Rescan progress status

Post by raccoon »

I notice when performing a Force Rebuild, or Rescan Now, there is no indication of progress displayed in the Statusbar. Have to open up the Index options to see what's happening. Request that this progress be included in the Status bar, as it is upon initial launch.

It was already suggested and on the to do list (although I can't find the relevant thread at the moment).

There will be a indexing progress bar in the status bar for the next major release.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It should be available in Everything 1.5, which is still in development.

I'm working hard to get an alpha release ready for testing.

Thank you for your patience.

I do not find where I may switch on a progress bar..
Ultimatively I rather need to see if the scan of a LAN folder hangs somewhere. As only beginning of the path is shown "Scanning:...." typically you cannot see whether it hangs.
Would it be possible to show the current sub-folder as well to show progress?
Thank you.

A progress bar is in development.

I will look into showing the currently scanned folder to the progress bar tooltip.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Everything 1.5.0.1259a adds the full rescan path to the rescanning tooltip in Tools -> Options -> Folders.

Adding a tooltip to the rescanning text in the status bar is still on my TODO list.

I've downloaded 1.5.0.1269a (x64), but can't see the option to show the current path being scanned. It would be nice if this was shown in the status bar by default where it displays "Scanning <Top path>..."

You are looking in the wrong place. As @void said:

And it looks like this:

This rescanning status is not shown for the initial index.
It is only shown when updating an existing index.

Showing the status for the initial index is on my TODO list.

it took me several attemps to really find the place where I can see the current scanned folder. Tooltip works and updates... BUT is it very counter intuitive! Why not show the scanned folder in the main GUI? instead of just "Scanning U:..."? for longer network names without a drive letter the share name is so long that it also does not display the current folder...
I've seen several requests here and finally it was just about taking it's time and sometime even a day or more... all those requests would not show up if there was some progress visible...

and btw.:
before a scan is finished there's no search possible... that is the next hassle to it...

Thank you for your feedback Fred0815,

The next alpha update will show the full path being scanned in the tooltip.
The path can be really long so its best not to fill the status bar all the time.

The initial index scan should only occur once.

There is an option to do a background scan to allow you to search immediately.
However, it is not very efficient. (uses way more ram)

To scan folders in the background (allowing you to search immediately):
  • Copy and paste the following text into the Everything search box:
    /folder_background_index=1
  • Press ENTER in the Everything search box.
  • If successful, folder_background_index=1 is shown in the status bar for a few seconds.
Ram usage will return to normal after restarting Everything.

Void: We are reading the version 1.4 thread I had started in 2019.
Here is a link to the sister thread that was posted in 2022 for version 1.5

Hello void team, thank you for the reply, I am already testing with 1.5.0.1315a.
Tried your recommendation:
/folder_background_index=1 => shows up in status bar after some seconds
but then it continues scanning without showing search results (I had >1mio results)

Maybe because I entered "/folder_background_index=1" while a scan is running?

My current workaround is:
kill Everything in Taskmanager and start again. After restart it continues as "rescanning..." and allows searching.
Actually, that's how I'd expect it ;-)

If you follow the suggested defaults
X Everything service
X Start Everything on system startup.
This way you would not have any wait time while searching.
