[Solved] Everything open - task switching (ALT+TAB) not possible

Post by tuska »

When Everything is open
  1. I cannot switch to another task with ALT+TAB.
  2. the "Everything Options"-window is opened in the background with the "Tools" - "Options" menu -
    but it cannot be displayed in the foreground.
  3. and when using the shortcut Ctrl+P to open the "Everything Options" window, the main window loses focus.
    The focus changes to the "Everything Options" window in the background.
  4. only when I send Everything to the background -> Systray with the ESC key then the "Everything Options"-window can be used
    and all other tasks as well.
A PC warm start was unsuccessful and I could also see the effect with Everything-1.5.0.1323a.x64.

Has anyone else noticed this behavior, which is new to me?
Thanks!

Here Alt-Tab cycles thru all available windows including the Everything Options.
Everything Options window can be get to the foreground and displayed as any other.

May be you have some windows set to always on top ?

Mmh,
I don't do that as a matter of principle - it could only have happened accidentally, but I wouldn't know when and where.

The problem is only NOT there when the Everything main window is in the systray.
Then I can switch.

Many thanks for the tip!

I searched for the term "top" in Everything.ini and found the following:

Code: Select all

ontop=1
On a trial basis, I changed it to the following value:

Code: Select all

ontop=0
and the unwanted effect was gone (however it came about). *)

Thanks again. :)

*) EDIT: now I know:
I tried using Ctrl+T to see if I could create a TAB in Everything
(but I knew beforehand that this would not be successful at the moment).

Code: Select all

View | On Top | Always -> CTRL+T (Global)
In future, you will have to be careful, because Ctrl+T is the standard shortcut in some applications,
e.g. Windows Explorer *, Total Commander, etc. to create a new tab.

I have now deactivated this shortcut in Everything for the time being.

The Ctrl + T shortcut was removed in Everything 1.5 by default.

It is likely this shortcut was copied when importing your Everything 1.4 settings.

To remove the Ctrl + T keybinding (which will become new tab soon):
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Keyboard tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show commands containing, search for: on top
  • Select View | On Top | Always.
  • Select Ctrl + T (Global).
  • Click Remove.
  • Click OK.

Yes, that's exactly what happened to me.
