v1.3.0.632b opens DB and then scans

Post by jgt1942 »

I just started Everything for the first time today, the last time was yesterday about this time, I did see in the status area that the DB (this was created yesterday for the first time) was being opened and then Everything proceeded to scan my system. I was expecting the scan to be skipped and just use the DB. I realize that the DB possibly needs to be updated but I would prefer if possible to skip the darn scan on my system with 15TB the scan takes longer than I like to wait. As I move forward I will be adding more storage which will increase the scan time even more. Can I start Everything and just have it use the DB and perform the scan in the background as necessary?

The C drive most likely will always have the largest number of changes whereas the other drives will have none or at the most be low compared to the C drive. For me the Documents folder is NOT on the C drive thus it will have changes. The other drives depending on the activity will have changes.

OPS - Everything is taking a MUCH longer time to scan my system then it did prior to me creating a DB. Have I done something wrong?

I had this problem a while back too. I didn't manage to get any help though.

Everything should scan for files and folders only once.
If you Exit Everything completely and restart does it re-scan?

Sorry to be so slow but yes Everything is still scanning. I just rebooted my system, opened xplorer2 (my file manager), right-clicked on a folder, selected Everything, in the status bar of Everything I see the DB being loaded and then I see that it is scanning my system. On this system I'm running Win7 Pro x64. I have SSD boot drive, hardware RAID-5 and two software RAID-1 arrays.

Try Exiting Everything and immediately try restarting Everything, does Everything rescan?

To see why Everything is re-scanning:
Run Everything with the -debug command line option.

Code: Select all

Everything.exe -debug
What is displayed in the debug console when Everything starts to re-scan?

Debug console
create mutex
load localization
load everything icon

set hook
create tray
db_load

enter main loop

loaded db in 3.053179 seconds

convert parent frn to parent pointers: 0.009703 seconds
WM_ACTIVATE 00000000 00000000, lastfocus 00100cec, current focus 00100cec

If I go to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Everything folder, right-click on Everything.exe > Compatibility I've checked (this was already checked) "Run this program as an administration" and the exit. Now in my filemanager I right-click on a folder and select Search Everything the DB will load and there is no drive scan. But tomorrow when I right-click on a folder and select Search Everything, Everything will load the DB and then scan my system.

In my current test after right-click and selecting Search Everything I see the DB load and the DB being updated. This is the first time I've noticed that the DB is being updated, I agree that it should be updated.

The USN journal was deleted after a restart... I am not sure what is deleting it.

It could be deleted because too many changes have occurred.

Please try increasing the maximum size of the USN Journal...
In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the NTFS tab.
For each Volume:
Set the Maximum size to 32768, if it is already 32768, try 65536.
Click OK.

I just set the max to 65536 for each volume.
Possible reasons for the large changes.
1) I'm in the process of cleaning up my music library (334 GB, 61,409 Files, 2,832 Folders) which is on my Q drive (9TB total, 3.65TB free, RAID5). I'm updating the tags, deleting duplicate albums (very few of these), and renaming files). I'm not sure of the daily activity for this, it depends on how much time I have for it and the issues I encounter. At times I have modified 100-300 files and other times the issues were more complex and I may have only modified about 100).
2) I also have a drive that has failed in the RAID5, I have replaced it twice in the past week, the RAID will rebuild, include the drive as part of the RAID and then the replaced drive fails. Needless to say I'm not a happy camper about this and I have ordered a WD RED drive and hope to receive it this week.

In C:\Program Files (x86)\Everything I right-click on everything.exe, select properties, I see that "Run as admin" is checked, I click the "Change settings for all users", in the new window "Run as admin" is checked, I uncheck it, click apply, then recheck the box and click apply, right-click on a folder and select Search Everything, the DB loads and much to my surprise it starts a scan. Yesterday when I changed the "Run as admin" it would just load the DB

Ops I see what I did wrong, I forgot to close Everything - after closing Everything just the DB is loaded, e.g. no additional scan. Thus Everything will work today as expected but tomorrow I will have to change the "Run as admin" setting.

Re: v1.3.4.686 opens DB and then scans

Post by jgt1942 »

OK I'm back again. I'm now running Everything 1.3.4.686, per the check for updates I have the latest version. My OS is now Win 8.1 x64 with all of the updates from Microsoft. My issue is still the scanning when I start Everything. It seems that 99.9% of the time when I start Everything it scans all of my nine hard drives. If I close Everything and immediately restart, it does NOT scan. To my knowledge all settings are the default settings. The Everything db is in the default location. Following is the INI file contents.

Thanks for the ini and errorlog.

I do not have a quick fix for the deleted USN Journal causing a re-index.
The next version of Everything will handle this issue more gracefully.
update_drive: DeviceIoControl: failed 1181
updated in 0.005885 seconds
failed to update drive C:
Try removing your C: from the NTFS indexes from Tools -> Options -> NTFS as it appears to be the problem index.
Maybe add essential C: folders as folder indexes from Tools -> Options -> Folders.

OK I removed my C drive (this is a SSD) and added the essential folders. I'll see how this goes.

Any thoughts as to why Everything has a problem with my C drive? Do you need any other info from me or do you want me to test something?

An application maybe spamming your C: drive with many file system changes causing the USN Journal to overwrite old history too quickly.

Sorting by recent changes in Everything can help detect this sort of file system spam:
  • Make sure your C: is indexed as a NTFS volume.
  • Search for C:
  • Sort by date recently changed.
  • Watch the result list to see what application maybe spamming the file system.

I just want to confirm I'm doing what you suggested. Following is an image of my NTFS indexing.
index NTFS options
index NTFS options

I noticed that with the above options and if I had nothing in the Indexes > Folders for the C drive nothing was returned when searching the C drive. This makes sense but I did not realize this until now. I added what I think are the important folders, following is my current settings for this.
index Folders options
index Folders options

Obviously when I changed the settings for the Index > Folders and clicked apply Everything had to rebuild the index db.
After the index scan completed I then closed Everything, right-clicked on a drive in my file manager, selected Everything and almost instantly the Everything window opened and DID NOT scan. I repeated this test several times and each time I had the almost instant results.

YEA!!!! This is good news!!! I suspect that clearing out the Indexes > Folders and then reestablishing the list and rebuilding the index had something to do with the success and possibly the sequence of events had something to do with the success. My above sequence listing may not be 100% correct but it is close, none the less I seem to have success at this time. Hopefully I will continue to have success.

I'm now running v 1.3.4.686 (x64) and Everything is back to scanning my system, I right-click on a drive or folder and select Everything. With almost 25TB of drives on my system this is very annoying.

I've not changed any of the options in Everything before upgrading or after the upgrade.

Possible suggestion - If a user right-clicks on a folder or drive and selects Everything why not just scan that folder or drive present the results and continue scanning the rest of the system in the background?

I'm back to asking how in the heck do I stop the scanning every time I open Everything?

Please make sure "Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything" is enabled from Tools -> Options -> General.
Please try enabling keep offline volumes.
Please uncheck auto include new fixed volumes in Tools -> Options -> NTFS.

The re-indexing will not be as taxing in the next release.
