Paste, paste to parent, disappeared from context menu

Post by harryray2 »

I've installed 1331a and the paste, and paste to parent etc, has disappeared from the context menu. I tried out an older version of Everything.exe and there was no problem.

I tried using the hot key, paste to parent...This still works.

It appears that if I right click in the results in the path column, the parent context menu entry appears, but not for a single item, only for multiple items. This also seems to be a problem with other context menu items.

The Parents context menu item will only show under the path column in Everything 1330+

This was done to keep the context menu clean and simple.

To always show the parent folders context menu item (like it was previously):
  • Copy and paste the following into your Everything search box:
    /context_menu_parent_folder=1
  • Press ENTER in your Everything search box.
  • If successful, context_menu_parent_folder=1 is shown in the status bar for a few seconds.
Do you prefer having this menu item always available?

What happens when you click a single item?
What is shown or not shown?

Thanks David, that's solved all the problems...I do prefer having it always available.

Something else I've noticed is that I had an issue with the time it took for the context menu to pop up after starting Everything (it was OK after the first time), it could sometimes take up to about 20 seconds, but with the new update the context menu is appearing straight away.

I did query this with you a while back and I think the conclusion we came to was that it was the fault of my (rather slow) system. Has something changed that has solved this problem?

No major changes to the context menu.

Have you enabled context_menu_simple_pidl?
Enabling this ini setting would improve performance when showing the context menu for many items.
However, it may reduce the information available to the shell. (mainly the properties window if you clicked properties)

Thanks, I'll give it a try..aside from properties, what other 'incorrect information in shell dialogues' is likely?

Depends on the context menu item you click.

Everything fills in the simple PIDLs with information from the index.
So things like size and date modified will be correct.
However, date created information will be missing (unless you index date created information)

In short, using simple PIDLs avoids going to disk to get information about the items you clicked.

Some context menu items will use the information from the provided PIDLs, while others don't.

An example of missing information:
Right click multiple files and click properties.
Click the Details tab.
Date created information might be missing.

It seems to mainly effect properties, which isn't that big a deal for me...If I access properties from the menu, rather than the context menu, will it be the same problem?

Yes.

Both will give the same results.

The general information will be correct.

Information under the details tab might be incomplete.

OK, I'm just giving it a try now..there doesn't appear to be much (if any) difference in the properties window.

As long as it may only effect properties, it's not a problem.

As far as I can tell, it only appears to give incorrect date details when choosing properties for multiple files, not single ones.
