What is URL protocol for?



I do not understand this:

URL protocol

Open Everything from es: urls.

For example, when clicking on es:abc123 Everything will launch and populate the search with abc123.

Should one activate it?

Here is an example and picture from user NotNull.

Say you're in your web browser, & you see a program update for, say, Everything.
And the update (web page) says "newest greatest thing since sliced bread, Everything 1.5.0.1322a !!!".

In your web browser, you highlight the word "Everything", then click a bookmarklet.
On doing so, that word, "Everything" is "sent to" Everything.exe, & Everything.exe then performs a search for the word, "Everything".

And that returns:
"Everything 1.5.0.1321a" & "Everything.exe" & "Everything.ini"...

(At which point, you say to yourself, self, I NEED TO UPDATE! [to 1322a])

You could highlight "Everything 1.5" for a more precise search.
You could highlight "Everything 1.5.0.1322a", for an even more precise search.
(And that search would not return any results - cause 1322a isn't, yet .)

An alternative to the bookmarklet, you could "physically" type:

es:Everything

into your browsers URL bar (but that is far less convenient then simply highlighting some test & saying "go!").

But being able to do that, rather simply sets you in the right direction to determine if you do or do not have the latest & greatest.

Yes, that sounds very good. Could I achieve anything similar by replacing Firefox with a further Everything window? Say, I want to open a folder (get the folder name in the search field) / show the content of a folder in the search result in another Everything window. Or show the folder / path in the folder panel to display its content in the result list?

Me? Yes, all the time actually unfortunately.

Actually I want to display the (entire) content of the folder with just one or two clicks / key presses containing the file Everything found. So if Everything find file xyz.ext and I click / press a key then the same Everything instance or another would show the content (including the contents of the sub folders or not, if both variations would be possible) of the folder in the result list.

Would be possible only, if the drive with the path is online, I suppose.
