I will apologize in advance in case I should have started a new post (didn't want to do it if it was redundant), or this question has nothing to do with the Alpha version (1.5).
I've been having Everything lose focus as soon as I launch it. Now, it might have something to do with the fact that I have the older, stable release installed simultaneously. But, before installing 1.5 alpha, if I press the global hot key to open Everything, it would appear and the cursor would be flashing in the search box without difficulty.
But now that I've **also** installed the alpha, even if I don't have a window open to the stable version, when I open the (different) hot key to the alpha, the window DOES appear. However, it immediately loses focus (to various other windows that I have open). When I installed the alpha, I did the best I could to replicate all the same settings in stable into alpha, only changing the settings for the Hot key to open it, and change where the database is. And then, on top of that, If I DO do a search in the alpha version, as soon as I press "Enter" to search what I want, I can no longer press ESC to get out of it.
You know, just typing in that last bit made me think "is the fact that they both use the ESC key to exit causing problems?" So I changed the stable to Ctrl-W only and the alpha to ESC (only), but the alpha still loses the focus immediately upon either launch or completing a search, but the alpha still won't close.
Lastly, for anyone wondering, Yes, I do have the OPTIONS > SEARCH > Focus Search on Activate IS checked.
Thoughts anyone? Should I try it after I remove the stable version? Or something else?
Everything 1.5 losing highlight focus
Re: losing highlight focus.
If "uninstalling" is easy for you, then that is an easy way to test (if 1.4 might be interfering).
Otherwise, you could just Quit 1.4 (& even uninstall its' Service, though I wouldn't think that should be necessary).

Re: Everything 1.5 losing highlight focus
Please make sure both Everything 1.4 and 1.5 are running as a standard user:
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the General tab on the left.
- Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
- Uncheck Run as administrator.
- Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
- Click OK.
- Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
- Restart Everything.
