"Greatest Hits"

Post by NotNull »

This has been at the back of my mind for some time ...

I think Everything is very well documented, but still: the forum is full of extra knowledge, wisdom and practical application examples.
This is an attempt to unearth all that to make it easy accessible to everyone. A "Greatest Hits", if you like.

So if you come across a thread where you think a lot of people should know about: post it here.

Unexpected uses of Everything would be interesting too (someone wrote a ransomware scanner using Everything!)
And if you have some useful bookmarks and filters: post them here too.
(@zonetrooperex has posted a bookmark collection here, btw)

A couple of things that come to mind, which are not obvious from the documentation/FAQ:
- Always check the statusbar if your search doesn't give the expected results
- Filter macros can have a parameter (link to example thread)
- Hardlinks can limit search results (link to thread)

But there are many, many more. Let's hear what you think belongs in the "Greatest Hits"

While going, this list will be organized.

This thread is a great idea! However, I'd suggest a more detailed/descriptive thread title, and also pinning it.

I've subbed and would love to know others' uses/tricks, as I always feel like there is so much more I could be doing with Everything but am not (yet) aware of.

Thank you for the support, Coldblackice!

I did not post my personal Greatest Hits (yet), as I really wanted to get everyone's take on it (and my Greatest Hits will probably be rather niche... )

People who want to contribute: a simple starting point would be to post your voidtools browser bookmarks as those are the entries that are important to them.

If this gets a bit more traction, it will be pinned.

Thanks for "re-animating" this thread!

The first post should contain the current and somehow curated list of such hits, with very brief descriptions; alike to how void maintains this thread: viewtopic.php?t=9787

I will try to remember this topic exists - and if I find any eligible for it, then will post it here

Hi NotNull and @meteorquake.
How do we request additions to a post (without adding yet-another-post to what ought to be a concise topic)?
For example, meteorquake's suggestion for Active Topics might be enhanced by a appendage that says something like "Active Topics" is an excellent way to stay on top of things when you are/can not be logged in"

(I use it when on my smartphone and at a client/friend's computer)
Thanks, Chris

For now, please post them in a new post, like you did.

The important part is centralizing all this information, however messy it may look at first.
The list will be organized and combined later on, so these comments should end up in the right place.
"Active Topics" is an excellent way to stay on top of things when you are/can not be logged in"
Agreed. It is my main view of the forum, even when logged in.

This sounds like a great initiative! There’s a lot of valuable knowledge in forums that often gets overlooked. I’d suggest including tips on optimizing search results, advanced filter techniques, and common pitfalls. Looking forward to seeing this “Greatest Hits” collection grow!
