How to make Everything take over the renamed drive label?

Post by Biff »

I renamed the label

of the 20 TB drive in the disk management in Win.

How could I make everything take over the new name?

Everything uses the label at time of index.

You'll need to force a rebuild for this volume to pick up the new label:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the NTFS tab on the left.
  • Right click your volume and click Reindex.
  • Click OK.

I'll look into automatically updating the index volume label when it changes.

Thank you for the issue report.

Thank you!

That does not mean that every property / file will be indexed like the first time lasting some hours or longer?

Why does Everything not automatically change / adapt the label? So what sense does that make, what is the advantage to keep the old label?

Every property will need to be rescanned on this volume.

It's a snapshot of the label at the time of indexing.
This is useful if the volume goes offline.
Everything currently does not expect the label to change.

I'll look into improving this in a future update.

Sorry for my bad understanding, what for is it useful to now have an old / not existing label? And why apparently only when the hard drive is offline?

Oops! Why? Is that so unusual?

Ah, that's great! Many thanks!

Ideally, Everything should update the volume label.

It's on my Things to fix list.

Oops, okey, alright, very confusing for me, sorry.

So at the moment generally actually one had to reindex evey new drive (after Everything automatically had indexed one), since one (I guess) usually would rename the drive's label to one's need. So one should try to rename the label before copying files to the drive.

Ah, so it is a bug obviously, now I see. OK, thank you very much!

Everything 1.5.0.1362a will now update the Index volume label property when the volume label changes.
