Another quick idea.
Often you're in the search bar but the folder bar is in the wrong folder. Usually the problem can be solved by going up a level (or two).
* It would be handy if there was a "Folder Bar Change to Parent" command one could assign a key shortcut to.
Then in the process of typing one's search, one could easily hit the shortcut. I don't think it would need any menu command.

Does Alt + Up help?
Tools -> Options -> Keyboard -> Folders | Up One Dir

Aha that works perfectly if I remove the Show All Search History assignment, as the shortcut seemed to be assigned to two commands - I presume I did that at some time, but you might want to check it's not the default.

Alt + Up is the default for Show Search History when the search box has focus.
