❓ Indexing updated files

I am testing Everything for content search, but I am not keeping it running in the background. I noticed that changed files are not changed in Everything DB.
- I tried "Force Rebuild" option, but it runs the whole process from scratch.
- I have "Index > Update indexes" checked, but still it's not updating changed files?

How can run a checking command on something every week or so to update the content search for only the changed files (depending of modified dated for example)?

Everything might be busy processing changes.

Please make sure Updating is not shown in the status bar.
Please check your index journal (Index -> Index Journal) to see if Everything detected the file change.

Everything will rescan content when the file is modified.



Please make sure Index -> Update Indexed Properties is checked. (if shown)

Everything is not seeing any changes to your file systems.

Everything service, and/or run indexing as administrator, and/or run as administrator
checked?

Ideally, the Everything Service should be checked.

If you are not running Everything all the time, use "Run indexing process as admin".
With "Run indexing process as admin", when you run Everything, you will see the UAC prompt to launch the Everything indexing process as admin.
If you install the Everything Service you will not see this UAC prompt.

You can leave this unchecked and just run Everything when you want.

The "Everything service" or "Run indexing process as admin" options are required to keep your NTFS indexes up-to-date.

An alternative option is to use folder indexing instead of NTFS indexing:
Uncheck Include in database for all your NTFS volumes under Tools -> Options -> NTFS.
Disable automatically include new volumes under Tools -> Options -> NTFS.
Add your drives under Tools -> Options -> Folders.
Uninstall the "Everything service" and disable "Run indexing process as admin".

Folder indexing is slower than NTFS volumes, doesn't find all files, can miss changes and rescans daily to pickup missed changes.

If you continue to use NTFS index, please make sure Monitor changes is checked for all your volumes under Tools -> Options -> NTFS.

I did the suggested options (no Everything service running all the time, as I don't use the program all day long, and don't want my slow computer to be affected), searched for something in the content, got 4 files.

Then I edited one of the files, and removed the text that had the search term, but:
- it didn't show "Updating" in the status bar
- the file still comes in the result when searching, although the search term is missing in it.
- the "Content Count" still shows 0 and it should be show "1" at least.

Although the "Date Modified" changed successfully after updating the file (7:01 AM).

Shouldn't it be updating the index while opening the program, depending on the last modified date?

I am seeing the expected results when indexing html content and modifying the html file to include/exclude the following text:

Could you please send a screenshot of Tools -> Options -> Content
Could you please send a screenshot of Search -> Organize Filters -> Content with count -> Edit
(maybe this filter is doing something odd, -please make sure the macro is set to: cc<search>)

Sorry, I think it was my mistake!

There was another instance for the search term in the file that I didn't notice.

I think if the "Content Count" showed the number of matches in the file it would have helped (as it shows 0, although there should be at least 1).

It's the - in the search term breaking the Content Count.

I'm working on a solution.


For now, please use double quotes around amosy-184.jpg:

That's right, using quotes showed the count

One is just a bit lazy not to type additional keystrokes when not needed , I even chose "Content with Count" from the right side list so I don't have to type "cc:" each time, lol.

I'll be waiting for the solution when it becomes a priority anytime later.. Thanks for your support .

It seems you like being pointed to issues that help keeping the program in a great shape all the time.

I noticed something else now:
- I don't have the Everything Service all the time.
- I closed Everything.

I edited a file, then open Everything, search for the new added term inside that file, but nothing showed in the results (and in the main index for all the files, it showed the old last modified date).

When editing the file while Everything was open, it saw and indexed the changed immediately.

Is there an option to run over indexed files that I can manually run when I need or something to check for changed or added (new) files to update the index? Or something that could run in the start the program?

I saw an option in Indexes > Index recent changes, but it gave a warning that it could slow down the program. However I tried it and it wasn't the one needed.

Is it an option here that I am missing?

Everything will detect changes to your folders while running.

To manually rescan your folder after starting:

Index -> Rescan -> E:\html-ebooks

To automatically rescan when starting Everything, launch Everything with:

Everything.exe -rescan "e:\html-ebooks"
