K: USB Flash Drive, does not show Size / Date

Everything 1373

K: drive, USB Flash, Include, Enable, Monitor

235 files = !size: !size:0
235 files - !date: (that's date modified)

So I enabled the Date Create column (not normally there) & the missing size/date files were date created as below

Code: Select all

DC = 4-25 3
     5-03 131
     5-04 2
5-06 99, this is "Everything" copied to the drive, today ? (or /at least/ the MAJORITY)
"today's" files were in a different directory (same drive) & /MOVED/ to current dir

ran chkdsk, chkdsk +Fix, no change
moved files, renamed files, no change
created a new file (DIR > "ford tough") -> no size nor date

ran Reindex, "fixed"

any other volumes that are /listed/ are NOT set to 'Include in database'
(Enable USN Journal IS checkmarked, though i take it it is not doing anything)

before "fixing" things,
a DIR > "ford tough", so a newly created file, also showed no size/date

Everything - K - Ford Tough, eh, why NO SIZE or DATE.TXT:

nothing new in what i do or how i go about doing with the files on the drive
files are copied onto, or moved, using (Altap) Salamander
files can be deleted in any manner of ways; through Everything, Salamander, or a dupe file cleaner

Hmm. I'd forgotten about the Attribute trick, so don't know if that would have worked here or not?
Likewise, the debug log. Though in this case, other then Safely Removing, the drive doesn't go offline unexpectedly.

Re: K: USB Flash Drive, does not show Size / Date

Post by void »

Thanks for the issue report therube,
created a new file (DIR > "ford tough") -> no size nor date
If you can reproduce the issue, could you please send verbose debug logs:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, check Verbose.
  • From the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, click Start debug logging.
    ---create a new/dir
---make sure Everything lists the file/folder with no size/date.
  • From the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, click Stop debug logging.
---this will open your Everything Debug Log.txt in notepad.
  • Please post here or upload here: /bugreport
Everything only logs 'reading NTFS file record failures' in verbose debug mode.
They naturally occur and will flood your logs.

ran Reindex, "fixed"
But if it breaks again, I'll re-check the DIR > bit...

Undo History

correctly shows files moved from 1 directory to another (on K:)
though Everything does not show the last 4 (up to this point in time) MOVES to have moved
(still showing their original directory, & attempts to open [via Everything] obviously fails - because they have in fact been moved)

drive volume letter, though the drive is removable, is essentially static, K: (having been assigned, specifically, to K:)

Index Journal

Code: Select all

shows the last recorded, correctly File Moved file, 08:07 PM
then correctly a File Create , 08:18 PM, 0-byte (though that is correct, i created a 0-byte file)
then, incorrectly File Create , 08:58 PM, <no size>, (though the Path is correct) - this also happened to be a newly created 0-byte file
nothing after that turns up...
(even though Index Journal stopped journaling, Debug Console continued to debug ;-))

nothing after that turns up...
& then newly created files are not recored, & i'll ASSUME ? that other operations, like a RENAME ? would also not be "reflected" back to Everything, though i'll assume the Rename would have actually completed

Re: K: USB Flash Drive, does not show Size / Date

Now... come to think of it...

Files are created from within Salamander
Shift+F4 is Edit New File dialog, with a default name of: new.txt

What I do is I paste a filename copied from clipboard (copied to clipboard from a different Instance of Everything)
into this (Salamander) Edit New File dialog

In this case, the original filename (pasted into the New File dialog in Salamander) was too long
for /Salamander/ to create. (Simply a limitation of LFN handling in Salamander)

(Everything would have handled it, but no way for it to create a new file in a directory, or is there?
If there was, I would use Everything, not needing Salamander for the particular operation. Anyhow.)

Anyhow... (let me find a LFN, should be easy ;-))

I'm thinking the original name was 250-chars
Copied to clipboard
Pasted into Salamanders Edit New File dialog
I then prefaced the filename with another 12 chars, so now we're up to 262 chars (but regardless of the 12)
Target Path is 38-chars
On attempting to create the file, Salamander reports, "Error: The path specified is too long."

Now I didn't know the source filename length, don't really care, so that Salamander couldn't create the file
with said filename doesn't really matter, I simply cut some parts out of the filename, same dialog, perhaps
needing to do that a few times until I end up with something small enough that it "fits". (This all happens
in the same dialog session, as in I don't abort, shorten, then paste the shortened. Again, I don't know
what length I'm starting with, only that it is too long for Salamander, & after shortening the name enough
the file is [newly] created.

This scenario actually sounds like a post from just today... doesn't it... (which will be yesterday, tomorrow, heh)

so... i should be able to duplicate this, no ;-)
(so -> Reindex)

didn't work!
(the duplication, this is)

This scenario actually sounds like a post from just today
This, Property Indexing causes Sharing Violation.

And on rereading that today (today today, not yesterday today), I realize when I attempted to duplicate the issue, I screwed up, as while I attempted to duplicate it with a file named:

Code: Select all

254LFN ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. LFN254.mp4
The file wasn't actually an .mp4, rather simply a file with an extension of .mp4 (& is of 0-bytes at that), so any attempt to deal with Properties relating to said file was for not (as there are not Properties to be had).

Set Everything search to: 254LFN

first i did a DIR > 254LFN
& that worked, was seen (by Everything)

then i used Salamander to attempt to newly create the (254-char) filename
Salamander complained, so i cut out some characters
Salamander complained, so i cut out some (more) characters
Salamander complained, so i cut out some (more) characters ...
& at some point it was short enough, so the file was created

but (unfortunately you might say), that then shortened filename was seen
by Everything

so... ?

Thanks for the issue report therube,

Everything should add the new very long name.
However, the old name will remain as a ghost, due to USN Journal using the short name.

Are you able to reproduce the issue?
I'm not seeing the shortname in any of the USN events from your log.
Could you please send the unedited output to support@voidtools.com

Speaking of ghosts (aka, "deadwood"), & as it was not Halloween, & I didn't have time to look up what I did not post the other day... (& so here it is, now):

thinking again
something, some things i mentioned above doesn't make sense, does it?

anyhow, so i was farting around as i'm thinking about it...
& i see i ended up with a SFN, which i don't really have any clue how that came to be?

i had this file "cms3..." & while the filename was long, it wasn't long enough
so i did stuff like move it from 1 dir to another, then Ctrl+Z
& i added chars to it to make it longer
& this & that & the other
all with the intention of Ctrl+Z'ing things back to where i started off at
& after 1 of my Ctrl+Z's, the next said (something like) it couldn't find the file
(at which point the filename was removed from Undo History)
& i though that was odd, but figured it was something i had done that caused the issue (maybe it was)

anyhow...

at this point
Everything shows 2 "cms" files
both are showing as 140 MB

SFN version in /movie/ - valid, plays
LFN version in /delme.from.K/ - "dead wood", it is not there, does not exist, though Everything shows it

AH.

so SFN was created 04-25-2023, so that had to have been sitting there for a long time now, no.

again my intention was to Ctrl+Z to put things back where they were
& once that done, i was going to move LFN from (where ever; /delme.from.K/ or /DONEX/)
to /movie/

if there were a collision
existing (i suppose it must have been based on DC) SFN in /movie/
& then i "moved" (but Index Journal does not show it) LFN from (where ever)
also to /movie/
& if SFN in /movie/ & the "move" of LNF, if that happened to resolve to the same SFN... ?

alright, no clue here ?

but File Create shows the SFN, giving an indication that it was done "now"
yet Properties shows DC from last year. would that be, a current File Create
yet it retained some aged DC?

(& also again, Salamander was involved in some of the machinations, like with the "999" file.
but might i have used Salamander to Ctrl+X on some "LFN" version of the cms3 & then Pasted
that into /movie/? might that have accounted for the SFN? have some sort of distant memory
about Salamander & SFN?)

(sleep beckons, yet it's still early ;-))

if it didn't show up in Undo History, & i don't think it did, then Everything didn't do it,
so it then must have been Salamander no? must search for "deadwood" (or "dead wood"), apt
to turn something up

(so this might simply be an issue related to Salamander causing "deadwood" to Everything
& not relating to the above issue, per se. that must be it...)

Heh, that said...
o: & h: are 2 different computers (i.e., office & home)

o: copied safeway.png, E1377.zip, E1378.zip & none have size/date
o: copied

h: copied E.session.png, OK, dir > nodate, OK

!date: files (so dm:), DO have dc:
ATTRIB +R <filename> does trick the dm: to show up

based upon dc:

Code: Select all

said .png was the last file copied to the drive, o:
	(then dc: descending from there)
	8 file copied, OK
	E1378.zip, failed
	12 file copied, OK
E1377.zip, failed (was also the 1st file copied to the drive)

18.min between E1377 & the next copied file
7.min total copy time for the 12+8, including the failed E1378 during that time
(only E1378 failed of those 21 total file)
5 hours later, that single .png (last file copied), [also] failed

E1378.zip was copied, separate process, whilst the 12+8 file copy was ongoing
(IOW might there be some sort of concurrent "high" I/O issue that might have caused the [dm:] miss?)

	drive is NTFS
	has been working fine, AFAIK
(i regularly check random files against source files)

i did find 1 file on the drive (a .msi) that was all NULs
it was /created/ 4-25-2023, which is the day the drive was put into service
now, if the file was corrupted as of that date, or at any point in time thereafter, no idea ?
might it be the drive?

do we have a HEX preview handler, override to all other handlers ?
or there was that thread for searching for consecutive NULs ?

so... failed, very last file, at o:, but then works, at h:
wonder what the next file copied at o: will do ?

wonder what the next file copied at o: will do ?
plugging the drive in, it updated some Properties. then i did a DIR > XXX & XXX was seen, so from o: to h: & back to o:, & changes are seen.

On same K: drive, I had a .sha1 file (stored on K:)...
The .sha1 basically checked out, fine.

12755 files, 25.6 GB, 120 files "no longer there", 1 file was diff

(.sha1 is fine if data is static

but, if the file - but not file /name/ - has changed over time
the file will rightly be flagged, BUT, you cannot know, why ?
(likewise, if the path has changed...)

was it corruption, or was it that the file was replaced with another?
(most likely the case of this 1 particular file)

even something as simple as date might clue you in as to the
reason, but .sha1 does not include date...)

(Everything would have handled it, but no way for it to create a new file in a directory, or is there?
If there was, I would use Everything, not needing Salamander for the particular operation. Anyhow.)
A little bit of a round-about way, but...

In my case, in this particular case, I am always wanting to create these new files in 1 particular directory.
So, I can hardcode that directory name & a file name too, & setting said file as read-only, & "editing" that file (not needing to actually "edit", but simply being able to save it - to a new file name, suffices).

So if you set up
custom_open_command01=$exec("C:\BIN\win32pad.exe" K:\xfeRRRRRRR\DONE\DONEX\delme.from.K\new.txt)
& assign a hotkey to it, say Alt+E (for 'E'dit)

win32pad opens new.txt
new.txt is read-only, so will persist & can't be changed
but a Ctrl+Shift+S (Save as... function in win32pad) allows me to paste in a [new] filename (already copied via Everything, of course)
& my newly named file is saved, as wanted.

And in that regard...

does Everything know the Path of the currently (what if more then 1) highlighted file?
if so, can that "variable" then be used in custom_open_command ?
if so, then i could do something like

$exec(cd %Everything_PATH% && "C:\BIN\win32pad.exe")

which would set "focus" to a specific path, then open my editor "in that path",
such that when i (create) & (then) go to save the file, it defaults to saving
the file in %Everything_PATH%... ?

but that won't work anyhow, will it
cause $exec(cd C:\TMP\) won't work... so how do you set the "base (working) directory"
with a $exec ?

OK, if i can't do that, then i just need to pass the dirname/filename to win32pad.exe
which should work, no? [should work, but how?]

i can even hardcode it - to test... no? [YES, that works]

what does, Result List -> Focus previous selected (Result List) (aka Shift+F4), do ?
(like if i wanted to use Shift+F4 to /create/ a New file {edit} [like Salamander uses])

or maybe something similar could be done with rundll32 or a .vbs ?

"$parent(%1)"

if so, then i could do something like

$exec(cd %Everything_PATH% && "C:\BIN\win32pad.exe")
It wouldn't work because Everything will execute this for each file.
So you'll end up with multiple win32pads running with the same parent folder.

but that won't work anyhow, will it
cause $exec(cd C:\TMP\) won't work... so how do you set the "base (working) directory"
with a $exec ?
$exec() sets the current working directory to the same location as the exe.
If the exe is C:\BIN\win32pad.exe, then the cwd is: C:\BIN.

You could create a bat to set the cwd, then execute the bat file.
cd %1
c:\BIN\win32pad.exe

what does, Result List -> Focus previous selected (Result List) (aka Shift+F4), do ?
F4/Shift F4 focuses the next/previous selection.

It's likely to change in a future release.
F4/Shift F4 will focus the next item from a "sidebar list"
Ctrl + Shift + F will have a "find results" sidebar.
(The same way Excel and Visual studio works)
