Everything crashing (1.5.0.1383a 64)

Post by null »

tedious attempt to locate what file extension is crashing everything. so far i have eliminated crashing, eps, png, scrivx

using method (*these extensions are associated with filename*)

Code: Select all

filename !ext:ai;dwg;pdf;rar;nst;dst;zip;edu;xml;xlsx;xls;ost;docx;scrivx;lnk;url;jpg;json;tif;idml;svg;3dmbak;3dm;stl;sbp;bak;indd;3ds;pfx;jpf;gif;h;docx;doc;dwt;mp3;msi;htm;ds$;arg;dxf;gz;psd;dwl;dwl2;web;bmp;tiff;3mf;dwf;eps;png;pptx;
not sure why these file extensions are causing everything to crash under this particular filename. the filename.eps is not corrupted and only 58kb. if i search .eps alone, it loads the extensions until i switch sort to by type or view by large or medium

same issue with standard release of everything.

Please try disabling icon shell extensions:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    icon
  • Select: icon_shell_extensions
  • Set the value to: false
  • Click OK.
Does the crash persist?

Are you viewing as thumbnails or showing the preview pane?

thumbnails

i changed to details and preview pane and one of the eps files crashes the program. I changed that files entension to eps.bak, checked in detail preview and selected the other eps files and did not crash. I then changed back to thumbnail, but there seems to be yet another file (probably associated with the ones I listed above) which is crashing it again.

I do notice the file path to this particular eps file is 231 characters without the file name, unsure if that is the problem.

Does Everything crash in detail view (View -> Details)?

Please try ShellExView to disable non-Microsoft thumbnail handlers.

Most shell extensions will crash with paths longer than 259 characters.

Yes, crashes in detail view with or without the preview pain enabled.

Disabled non-Microsoft thumbnail handlers and still crashes.

I do not know if crashing is due to the character length, it is an assumption.

I excluded the offending path from search, and everything still crashes in thumbnail view using the parameters above. I have yet to investigate it further.

Please try disabling icons to see if it is an issue with icon type shell extension or overlay icon:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    icon
  • Select: icons
  • Set the value to: false
  • Click OK.
Does the crashing persist?
Is a crash dialog shown -or does Everything just disappear?

Thanks for the troubleshooting information.

I used your config and search with no issues here.

Is a crash dialog shown -or does Everything just disappear?
-A mini crash dump would show exactly what is happening.

Everything just disappears.

I have Everything setup as a service. it is running in the background in the taskbar. I open everything, enter 'filename,' everything refreshes the thumbnails. I then change to sort 'type,' then scroll down where it seems to stop at an eps file, the hour glass displays then everything crashes.

Please try enabling shell_max_path:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    shell
  • Select: shell_max_path
  • Set the value to: true
  • Click OK.
This will enforce a maximum shell path of 259 characters.

Please try excluding certain thumbnail extensions in Everything:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    thumbnail
  • Select: thumbnail_exclude_files
  • Set the value to: *.eps
( use a semicolon to separate values, eg: *.eps;*.bmp )
  • Click OK.

enabling shell_max_path

worked

Entering 'filename eps' now displays all EPS files without crashing, even when selecting EPS files with a path length of 231 characters, excluding the EPS file name.

not sure why some of these other files are not displaying thumbnail images though, may need to reinstall sagethumbs or something better.
