Everything is not previewing most media formats

Post by vsub »

I don't know if there is something wrong on my end,I installed the LAV Filters but for example when I try to preview a mp3,I just see the file icon
I had a very olf K-Lite codec pack(I think I installed it back in 2016 and never update it)

What do I need to install to make the preview sidebar to preview files like flv,ogg,mp3,ogm,mkv
It only previews the most basic formats like avi, wav, mpeg and wmv

MP3 plays fine in Everything preview if I start with the provided button in the player.
Using K-Lite Codec Standard 18.6.4 with default settings.

When you say Preview, you're looking to see (hear) what?
See a thumbnail picture of a video clip (cd cover of a mp3)?
Or you're expecting to be able to play the clip/mp3 in the Preview window?

What OS?

For .flv thumbnails (on Win7) I had to use Icaros (as Win7 does not natively see .flv).
Video preview thumbnail and video length duplicate.
Likewise WMP does not natively play .flv video files. (I'm not concerned about that).

So for me, Preview of .flv will show a thumbnail, but I cannot "play" the clip in Preview (WMP).

Can't imagine that .mp3 are not playing for you?
Does WMP play .mp3 for you? What OS?

When audio\video formats work properly in the preview window,I see the windows media player and I can play them.
Long time ago(when I was actually using the preview window),I was able to play any audio\video format that windows media player can play thanks to the codes

But now there are very few formats I can play in the preview window
It is weird that I cannot play mp3 files

If I run my autohotkey script that is use the windows media player(WMPLayer.OCX),I can play any file

Are previews working in Windows Explorer?
-You should see the exact same previews as Windows Explorer.

Previews may not show if Everything is running as administrator.
-Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (from the File menu, click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.

Previews may not show if you are using the x86 version of Everything.
-Please make sure you are using the x64 version of Everything.

Please let me know if the issue persists.

Preview in explorer does not work wit every format but I tried with mp3
It does work in explorer but it does not in everything

I am using the latest x64 1.5 version and I am using the service
Everything in running in portable mode

I also tried something else
Download the latest x64 and extract it into a new location
Close the current instance along with the service
Run the new copy I just downloaded with -no-db command line
Set the indexing to manual and add a folder that contains mp3 files
When I enable the preview sidebar, the player was not there again

Is there is some registry key that everythig is looking at to tell what files to preview?

Please try setting the preview handler for mp3 files to Windows Media Player:
  • From the Start menu, search for
    regedit
  • Right click Registry Editor and click Run as administrator.
  • Navigate to:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp3\ShellEx
  • Create the following key:
    {8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}
  • Navigate to:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp3\ShellEx\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}
  • Set the (default) value to:
    {031EE060-67BC-460d-8847-E4A7C5E45A27}
Press F5 in Everything to refresh the current preview.

-or-

  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    preview
  • Select: preview_handlers
  • Set the value to:
    [{"filter":"*.mp3","handler":"{031EE060-67BC-460d-8847-E4A7C5E45A27}"}]
  • Click OK.

Hmm that's weird,I didn't have the ShellEx key
After adding the whole key,the mp3 files start working, thanks

Do you know of any tool that can fix all files(mp4 and some other formats are also not working)
The more I look into it,the more I think I did something long time ago that disables the preview(unregistering a dll or deleting registry keys)

I can just set the preview handler into everything but is there is a way(probably is)to not set ust few extensions but for example all files that goes into the audio\video filter

For me, I didn't even have a shellEx folder in the .jpg extension in the registry. Is this considered normal ? because sometimes I can see thumbnails for windows created folders but when I link my phone to my PC with USB, the same file thumbnail doesn't appear.

The {8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f} key is usually under the file class (not the file extension).

To find the file class:
  • From the Start menu, search for
    regedit
  • Right click Registry Editor and click Run as administrator.
  • Navigate to:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp3
  • The (Default) value on the right is the class.
  • Navigate to:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\<class>

    For example:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMP11.AssocFile.MP3
  • Navigate to:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\<class>\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}

I can just set the preview handler into everything but is there is a way(probably is)to not set ust few extensions but for example all files that goes into the audio\video filter
To copy your audio/video filter and add the preview handler:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
  • preview
  • Select: preview_handlers
  • Set the value to:
  • Code: Select all

    [{"filter":"ext:aac;ac3;adt;adts;aif;aifc;aiff;amr;ape;au;cda;dts;ec3;fla;flac;lpcm;m1a;m2a;m3u;m3u8;m4a;m4b;m4p;mid;midi;mka;mp2;mp3;mpa;mpc;oga;ogg;opus;ra;rmi;snd;wav;wax;weba;wma","handler":"{031EE060-67BC-460d-8847-E4A7C5E45A27}"},{"filter":"ext:3g2;3gp;3gp2;3gpp;amv;asf;asx;avi;bdmv;bik;d2v;divx;drc;dsa;dsm;dss;dsv;evo;f4v;flc;fli;flic;flv;hdmov;ifo;ivf;m1v;m2p;m2t;m2ts;m2v;m4v;mkv;mod;mov;mp2v;mp4;mp4v;mpe;mpeg;mpg;mpls;mpv2;mpv4;mts;ogm;ogv;ogx;pss;pva;qt;ram;ratdvd;rm;rmm;rmvb;roq;rpm;smil;smk;swf;tod;tp;tpr;ts;tts;uvu;vob;vp6;webm;wm;wmp;wmv;wmx;wvx","handler":"{031EE060-67BC-460d-8847-E4A7C5E45A27}"}]
  • Click OK.

For me, I didn't even have a shellEx folder in the .jpg extension in the registry. Is this considered normal ?
Same as above, it will be under the jpg class (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg (default) value):
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}

However, jpg files don't have a preview handler.
Windows Explorer and Everything handle images separately with a built-in image preview handler.

This tip works fine here :D

Tested with:
mp4, mkv, flv, avi
mp3, wav

So basically what that is saying is to use WMP's Rich Preview Handler for those particular file types, overriding what the Windows Registry may happen to use for same (be it the same, or different)? And then that also assumes that WMP's RPH can actually handle said file types (otherwise you would get no preview for those it can't handle).

@therube can everything use something else to preview audio\video files(VLC maybe)
For some reason when I preview video files, everything will randomly crash
Or maybe if there is a way to run the preview handler in a separate thread from everything so if something happen, everything will not crash

(Well, if you didn't Preview, but instead simply double-click on the file, it would open in your media player, so if your media player then crashes, that shouldn't affect Everything ;-). Plus, your media player [if it's of any value] can play all media types, not only those that WMP may happen to support.)

Have a particular video file that reliably crashes Everything?
