This hasn't occurred for me before and isn't repeatable but it may stimulate thinking that gives some idea of what could have been happening.
I had an exFAT RAM Drive "R:" selected, and dragged two of its items to another tab where there was a VBS script which I dropped them onto.
Thereafter when I visited (I tried back and forth) that target VBS tab and went back to the R: tab the view of the R: tab would revert to the last thumbnail view it had had, but if I visited other tabs and back this didn't occur. There was also an offline R: NTFS drive which is probably a red herring.
It was cured after I exited entirely and relaunched (and also removed the R: NTFS).
Anyway, I can't add any more info than that, I hope some insight may come from this.
