View -> Thumbnails, when source is video:

Post by therube »

View -> Thumbnails

Was thinking...

if the item is video:
& you also had set, View -> Thumbnails,
generate a thumb from the video ?

(yes there are programs out there,
& in the past i've dabbled with dragging sets of files,
from Everything into thumbnail program,
but i never really got anything meaningful out of it)

i'm /thinking/ - though not sure ?
that if you could have thumbs of video:
like you can with pic:

there might be a benefit there ?
(& granted, maybe even of limited benefit)

(& to show how limited, i did a Find, /cards which found "card game",
which /was/ what i was after, to begin with :-).)

Everything doesn't know what a video is.

Surely there's existing third party thumbnail handlers that generate a thumbnail from the video source?

I'm not looking to make thumbnails, per se.
More to display a thumbnail, just like is done with pic:, though for video: - with the hope that enough information is provided in the thumb to be beneficial.

As it is, I virtually never use Thumbnail view (almost exclusively details), though in the odd instance, having thumbs of video: might be of benefit (in particular where then name doesn't particularly reflect content, or when name is wrongly named).

To my best of knowledge, those thumbnail handlers generate these thumbnails on-the-fly.
Or read them from the thumbnail cache if generated earlier.

See for example [Suggestion] Jump to a good frame for video preview thumbnail

I'll note that Preview Pane (which I also rarely use) is fine, except you only see 1 item at a time.
Where a Thumbnail view would display multiple thumbs making for easier comparisons between files.

For me thumbnails for videos are displayed fine in Everything
and all file managers.
May be a result of the K-Lite Standard codec package

My issue was, Thumbnails, what is needed to display?

So now I'll have to see, now that I can see thumbnails, how it pans out in practice.
