Understanding offline volumes

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I hooked up my weekly backup drive as Z: and included it in my Tools, Options, FAT list. Everything showed me the 750,000 objects and 707 GB in my result list for Z:\ so I am happy.

I don't like playing with my [lifetime] weekly backup, so I dismounted it and went back to work.

Objects from the Z: drive still appear in my Result List even though the Z: drive is cable-disconnected from my machine. This is because at the time it WAS connected, Everything absorbed its Folder and File data into an Everything database.

That's why Everything can still tell me about Z:\[betty's photos].

But the Z:-object data is frozen at 11:00 this morning, the time that first I briefly connected the USB backup drive, correct?

And once I Remove that (Offline) drive from my Tools, Options, Index, Fat list, I'll never see Z: data again until I re-connect and mount that USB drive AND apply it (for the second time) in my Tools, Options, Index, Fat list. Correct?

Thanks, Chris

Correct, any changes made to your Z: drive while it is online should be detected by Everything.
Everything will perform a background rescan of your Z: drive when it is inserted after a scheduled rescan is missed. (Everything will try to rescan this drive daily by default)

Thank you Void.
I am still wrestling with the Tools, Options, Indexes area of the GUI; I feel that it is confusing but I have not yet crystallized my thoughts.
I suspect it will come down to a level of "What makes most sense to the user?", which is probably an answer to the question "What questions and actions is the user likely to want at different times?"
Cheers, Chris
