Version 1.3.4.686 W7/32 Files not found in system folders.

Post by Stubi »

I use Version 1.3.4.686 (x86) on Win 7. When I search a file in the folder C:\Windows\System32 I get only files I created but not the Win 7 files. For instance I created the file ntkrnlXXX.exe and can find it. But the file in the same folder ntkrnlpa.exe not. I did not exclude any system files/folders or hidden files/folders.

These are probably hardlinks.

Unfortunately, Everything does not index hardlinks.
This is a limitation with NTFS, USN Journals and Everything.

If you need these files indexed, please consider folder indexing.

This with the hard links seems to be the problem. And as you write it can be solved with folder indexing. Only the documentation seems to be not correct

"Certain files under Windows Vista and Windows 7 are hard links.
"Everything" will not include hard links.
For example, on Windows 7 C:\windows\notepad.exe is a hard link to c:\windows\system32\notepad.exe
Only the original file c:\windows\system32\notepad.exe will show in "Everything"."

At my system (without folder indexing) I get c:\windows\notepad.exe but not c:\windows\system32\notepad.exe. So it seems to be the other way round. And with folder indexing active I get both - great! And thanks to your link I discovered that I even can keep a folder index of offline disks. Will help me a lot.

Thank you for your support + the great software!

I have a similar problem and am curious as to how Windows decides on these hard links.

I am using the same version and architecture of Everything.

I recently searched for dllhost.exe, on my laptop Everything will show it in the Sytem32 folder but not in the winsxs folder.
On the PC it is the other way around, Everything will show it in the winsxs folder but not in the System32 folder.

Another curiosity. If on the PC I enter the Windows folder in the Indexes\Folders window Everything will display the winsxs entry twice (I now only have the System32 folder in Indexes\Folders on the PC - seems to work fine).

It is the first instance in the MFT.
Usually the name of the file when it is first created, although this can change if the MFT entry is re-written.

I have added native support for all NTFS hardlinks for the next update of Everything.
