Newbie here. How do I construct a search that returns folders only (and no files)?

Please try including the following with your search:
folder:

To change the active filter to search for folders:

• From the Search menu, click Folders.

The active filter can also be changed from filter bar.
To show the filter bar:

• From the View menu, click Filters.
