Suggestion list is covering way too much

Post by vsub »

Can something be done about this...when I start typing,a suggestion list appear which is covering the whole result list and I can't see anything until I choose something from it.

Oh I only guessing, but try this...

Exit Everything
Edit Everything.ini
Change the setting for: search_history_max_results=24, 24, to the number you want

If you don't know where Everything.ini is, use Everything to find it before you exit it ;-).

I know where it is(I'm using the portable version and I place it in a folder where I place other other Everything related things(other versions and autohotkey scripts).

And yes,that option did the trick...I'm not very happy with the result because it's still covering thing in the list but at least it's better than covering the whole list.
Thanks

I've added an ini setting search_history_show_above for the next beta update.
Setting this to 1 will show the search history drop down above the search edit instead of below it.

I'm sure you are already aware, but for everyone else:

Other options that affect the suggestion list drop down:

Tools -> Options -> History -> Enable search history
Must be enabled for the suggestion list drop down to function.

Tools -> Options -> History -> Always show search suggestions.
When enabled, this will show the suggestion list drop down when you make a change in the search edit.
When disabled, the suggestion list drop down is only shown when you press CTRL + Space in the search edit.

Tools -> Options -> UI -> Search as you type.
When enabled, the search will occur immediately with each keystroke.
When disabled, the search will only occur when you press Enter or select an item from the suggestion list drop down.

Tools -> Options -> Keyboard -> Show commands containing: -> Search Edit | Auto Complete Search
Define the keyboard shortcut to show the suggestion list drop down.

Filter bar position
The suggestion list drop down is shown in the same horizontal position as the search edit.
You can manipulate the position of the search edit with the filter bar.
The filter bar can be locked to the left by dragging it to the far left.

ini settings

search_history_enabled=0
Enable or disable search history.

search_history_days_to_keep=90
The number of days to keep search history.

search_history_always_suggest=1
When 1, this will show the drop down when you make a change in the search edit.
When 0, the suggestion list is only shown when you press CTRL + Space in the search edit.

search_history_max_results=24
Specify the number of results to show in the suggestion list.

search_history_show_above=1
Show the suggestion list above the search edit.

I'm not really sure about this fix...making something appear outside the everything window will look,well,ugly(personal option)
How about something like this

And how about shorting the file path(do you have any plans)?
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\New Folder
to something like
C:\Docum...Desktop\New Folder
when the path can't fit in the Path column(in my case it's almost always...I have to either click on the file or mouse over the path to see if it's the file I'm searching for...in that folder)

What about moving the filter bar to the left so it snaps to the left side?

Yes,that another posible fix...the filters look better on the right tho
Btw why not also add a scroll bar for the suggestion list...that way you can keep it small(height)and have many suggestions

I can see a scroll bar being useful.

I will review it after the next major release.

btw you can lock the filter bar to the left already by dragging it to the far left.

I didn't know that...I thought I'll just resize it by moving it to the left.
Well it looks like a good fix for now(it looks little weird to me now since I'm used to seeing at the right side)
