Works until a after a reboot

Post by bluesmanuk »

I've been using search everything for a long time now but I came to run a search but nothing would load, either from the program menu or the system tray icon.

So i uninstalled and re-installed and it worked.

But after a reboot it stops working again.

I've removed and re-installed again and run malware scans but the same thing keeps happening and I haven't a clue why.

Please make sure "Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything" is enabled from Tools -> Options -> General.
Please try disabling Auto include fixed volumes from Tools -> Options -> NTFS.

Please try forcing a index rebuild from Tools -> Options -> Indexes -> Force rebuild.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried that but it didn't work.

I can't think of anything that will have changed to suddenly prevent it from working.

Do you see an Everything search window at all when you start up Everything?
Is there an Everything icon in your system tray / notification area?

+1

I think bluesmanuk has Win10. I installed win10 64-bit, and have since tried all combos of Everything x86 and x64 both portable and install with both "service" and "run as admin". It just doesn't start. Put it manually in Startup folder, still nothing. Run as admin is greyed out in properties in Windows. UAC always pops up. Disabled UAC, still no go.

This goes for both 1.4.0 and 1.3.4

Windows 10 would be blocking Everything from running on start-up as admin.

Please try installing the Everything service and disabling run as admin:

To install the Everything service:
  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab.
  • Check Everything Service.
  • Click OK.
To disable run as admin:
  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Click OK.

Tried that combo as well. It just won't start and show up in my notification tray, nor does my hotkey invoke it.
Seems like win10 and win7 are two different beasts. Had no issues on win7 at all, regardless of way to startup Everything.

Actually, Everything service IS running, I can see it in the Task manager, but no notification tray icon, no hotkey function...

Any change if you reboot your computer in Safe Mode?

In such a way, that Everything doesn't start at all, yes.

In the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + ESC) under More details..., under the Startup tab, is Everything listed? is its status enabled?

Please make sure all compatibility options are disabled for Everything:
  • Right click your Everything shortcut, and click properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab.
  • Uncheck all options.
  • Click OK.

That did it, last piece of the puzzle. Got one last question of "allow to run", removed tick from "always ask".
Problem solved, thanks! Have a great weekend!
