Firefox opening new window instead of tab

Post by harryray2 »

I'm using Firefox 88...If I want to open a new tab from an external application, instead of a new tab opening, a new window is opening instead.
For example, if I'm running Everything and I click on https://voidtools.com, the voidtools site opens in a window, rather than a new tab.

Unfortunately, the new window opens without any of the addons enabled.

I've tried various settings in about:config, but nothing seems to force FF to open a tab instead of a window.

Are Firefox and Everything running under the same account?
(check the User Name and Elevated columns in task manager)

about:config, see if setting, browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external to 3 makes any difference?

Oh, this:
Unfortunately, the new window opens without any of the addons enabled.
What is happening is you are not opening "your" Profile, you are actually opening a different Profile!

See, Open a link in the open Firefox in a new tab?

On your "normal" open of FF (the one where you have your bookmarks/extensions...), are you using the
-p
command-line switch (or some other)?

Check
about:profiles
.
I'll take it that multiple are listed.
That your "normal" one is not the one noted as, "Default Profile".
(This would be noted as the "Default Profile", & not simply a profile name that may happen to have the word "default" in it.)

No, the profile is fine...I have a RSS feed programme and when I open from that, the tabs open in FF with no problem, but other programmes insist on opening a new Window.

OK, then explain that further?

So you're saying a different instance of FF is not opening.
Only that the new window that this RSS feed program causes to open, does not open as a "typical" (full if you will) window, but rather (might) not have (display) the menu bar or the status bar (kind of thing) so your extensions - while there, are not "visible"?

SeaMonkey (browser) has (GUI) options to not allow things like that to be disabled.
FF too, I'm thinking, should be able to set similar options via about:config (though offhand, not sure of the particular Pref names).
