Asking for opinions: What is an Everything theme?

Post by NotNull »

I am writing a Theme Manager for Everything 1.5 with currently just some basic colour settings (see screencapture below for a first impression).

But there are *lots* more settings that could be considered a theme setting. Or not ...

Like fonts. The fonts that are used are used for dark as well as standard ("light") theme in Everything. Should these be part of a theme?
"Zebra-lines" (alternating row color. Part of a theme?
Layout (folder sidebar, filters bar, etc.) Part of a theme?
And the list goes on ..

I wrote another version of this Theme Manager where different categories can be selected, -- like Fonts, title/statusbar format, accents -- to be used or ignored during theme import, so "things" will be selectable.
On the other hand: too many categories isn't very human-friendly.

So please give your opinion on what an Everything Theme should be.

This looks neat!

I am also still working out what settings are "theme" settings.

I recommend having an option to allow the user to backup all their current "theme" settings.
"Theme" settings should include fonts and colors. (any visual settings, grid lines, listview margins, thumbnail padding etc..)
I recommend making layouts optional. eg: some users will like the folder sidebar, others will not.

statusbar/title formats as an option. (or leave these)
Keep it simple.

Eee... Everything! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74BzSTQCl_c&t=10s

Jokes aside: everything that concerns colors; and fonts. But I would split them or just stick to the first one

Placement of various elements and theirs sizes in my book is not part of a theme but of settings

I think you should pick the exact same colors as native Windows 11. Perhaps you can use a color picker and just eye drop the explorer.

Font = Segoe UI
Highlight = #323232
Background = #191919
Background Dark = #151515
Background Light = #202020
Background Highlight = #505050

Thank you for the suggestion, @webmaster.

I have put the Everything Theme Manager on hold as there seems not to be much interest in it.

Just two themes light and dark are good enough IMO.
Let font and other things be left to the users to change, if they want to.
I use dark theme, which works well except that some dialogs/forms still show up in light mode.
Just changing that to follow color scheme in main window will be awesome.

(If it looks like XP, is quick & efficient, I'm good.

Dark, I don't deal well with.
"Homogenized", where you can't tell what program you're in, I don't deal well with.
I do use coloring of the results - along with that "grouping" [demarcating] preference, as that helps me to differentiate, & I do highlight the current tab.)

I can't see that pre-made themes can have colour and size etc mingled together as they are entirely separate things.
I would have a multi-part theme, where each choice has a few options. So you choose a colour theme from a few, you - separately - choose a font from a few, and then size from a few etc.
For fonts I would say that my favourite for all things is Trebuchet MS - proportional, non-serif, and doesn't have ambiguous letters. Probably not ideal for anyone using non-alphabetic characters.
