Response Times

Over the last few weeks I've seen a dramatic increase in response time on some of my desktop apps, primarily Everything and XnView.
Both of these apps have an index in the tens of thousands, and perhaps millions of files, across two RAID/NAS drives with a combined memory of 2Tb.

So I'm wondering if the volume of items I'm asking Everything to track is a cause for a dramatically slower response.

If that's the case, can I set up two instances of Everything, so that each only indexes on drive, yet can both run at the same time?

Everything will use about 100MB per 1 million files.
Slow Everything performance can occur when Everything memory is paged to disk.

Slow Everything performance can occur if there are many changes to your file systems.
Please try sorting your results in Everything by Date Recent Changed to monitor changes to your file systems.



To run multiple instances of Everything, please see Multiple Instances

For example:
Keep the normal unnamed instance to index your C: drive.
Create a new instance D: with Everything.exe -instance D:
Install the Everything Service if prompted.
In the normal unnamed instance, setup your indexes under Tools -> Options -> NTFS to include only your C: drive.
In the D: instance, setup your indexes under Tools -> Options -> NTFS to include only your D: drive.

there are constant changes to the file system - well, if you call changes to google and firefox parts of the file system. Thousands of little changes a day.

Would be nice to keep Everything from tracking certain apps. I note that there's an option to exclude filesystem files and folders - is it possible to make that include specific apps?

I'll go through the optimising for memory footprint, switching things off and on to see if that's a major factor. I haven't found a mention of where the memory is paged to.

To exclude most application settings and data files:

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
• Click the Exclude tab on the left.
• Click Add....
• Select C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData
• Click OK
• Click OK

To exclude a specific application settings and data files (eg Firefox):

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
• Click the Exclude tab on the left.
• Click Add....
• Select C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox
• Click OK
• Click Add....
• Select C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox
• Click OK
• Click OK
